The “people of the left”, a coherent whole on the merits but divided on the merits

At a time when questions about the future of the New People’s Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) are jostling, a study published on Thursday August 25 answers, at least in part, the “electorate” of the equation. Who composes and what does it think? “left people” who voted mainly for Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the presidential election, then for the alliance of left forces in the legislative elections? Carried out on a sample of 1,700 people, this survey conducted by Kantar for the Jean Jaurès Foundation, the Center Emile-Durkheim of Sciences Po Bordeaux and the Center for European Studies of Sciences Po Paris makes it possible to draw lessons on the demographic diversity of the union of the left. The alliance brings together a large demographic: older for those who say they are close to the Socialist Party (PS), younger on the side of La France insoumise (LFI), more feminized and qualified for Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV ); more workers and employees on the LFI side, more executives in the environmentalist support base. So three different blocks. For Antoine Bristielle, director of the foundation’s opinion observatory, this is “a quality rather than a defect, because the Nupes label allows you to cast a wide net, to speak to the different bases”.
These blocks do not correspond to the results of the presidential election, far from it. The support base of the PS as of EELV far exceeds the results obtained by Anne Hidalgo and Yannick Jadot in April, enough to fuel the temptation to seek scores in the intermediate elections. But going disunited to European or local elections could also, as La France insoumise constantly argues, disappoint an electorate concerned with unity. For the “rebellious”, the whole issue is to maintain the momentum of the presidential election and the preeminent position acquired in the landscape on this occasion.
A narrow path
Basically, notes the researcher at Sciences Po, the sympathizers of the left, who have been asserting their desire for union for several years, are characterized by their many convergences. Against retirement at 65, for the minimum wage at 1,400 euros net, also for “reducing economic growth to preserve the environment”, these three blocs agree on many things. There are many sticking points, the place given to nuclear energy (PS sympathizers are mostly in favor, while the “rebellious” are divided, and environmental sympathizers mostly against). The international too: the LFI respondents consider the consequences of globalization generally negative, unlike their socialist comrades.
