When selling its business in Russia, McDonald’s management expressed a desire to return if circumstances change, says Alexander Govor, owner of the Vkusno-i Tochka chain. He clarified that he promised the representatives of the American company that he would retain a controlling stake in the Russian network.
“To be honest, if I were them, I would have chosen me too. Already showed himself as a partner, knew the system from the inside. What is McDonald’s reason to risk with a dark horse? They did not hide the fact that they expected to return to Russia if circumstances changed, so they wanted to be sure that the business would not fall apart,” Mr. Govor said in an interview with TASS.
He clarified that within the framework of the deal to buy out the Russian business of the network, the option of returning McDonald’s is provided. “But they will redeem with the money I invested. At the same time, there is an agreement that I will be the first applicant for the master franchisee, ”the businessman emphasized. He believes that the American company “is unlikely to continue to operate restaurants in the event of a return.”
In May 2022 McDonald’s announced about leaving the Russian market. The assets of the network were bought by Alexander Govor, it was renamed into “Vkusno – and that’s it.” The first restaurants in Russia opened in June of the same year.
