The Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay went to Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for Everything, Everywhere. The plot revolves around the story of Evelyn, who unexpectedly learns that she can travel through parallel universes and gain access to the skills of other versions of herself. The film leads in the number of Oscar nominations (11).
This is the first Oscar nomination for Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. In 2016, they won the Sundance Film Festival Directing Award for Swiss Army Knife Man. The two began their careers in the 2000s, working together on Children’s Hospital (2008–2016) and Aquafina: Nora of Queens (2020). Dan Kwan also starred in Legion (2017-2019), Daniel Scheinert directed the crime drama The Death of Dick Long (2018) and How to Become a God in Central Florida (2019).
Martin McDonagh (Banshee Inisherina), Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner (Fabelmans), Todd Field (Tar), Ruben Ostlund (Triangle of Sorrow) also fought for the victory in this category.
