The operator of Nord Stream 2 announced the resignation of director Matthias Warnig

Matthias Warnig stepped down as Managing Director of Nord Stream 2 AG, operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, reports Interfax with reference to the company’s statement. The operator’s activities will continue to be handled by a steering committee led by Transliq AG.
“Nord Stream 2 witnesses and sincerely appreciates the outstanding leadership and invaluable contribution of Matthias Warnig throughout the long and difficult journey of building a large cross-border energy infrastructure and wishes him well in all his future endeavours,” Nord Stream 2 AG said in a statement.
Matthias Warnig, 67, was appointed managing director of the Nord Stream operator in March 2006. Until 2022, he was a member of the board of directors of Transneft and Rosneft, but was forced to leave companies because of the sanctions imposed against him.
In January, Mr. Warnig told Zeit that he personally spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin after the start of the military operation in Ukraine. He said that he was trying to make it clear to the head of state that he must complete the special operation. According to the newspaper, no one in the West has closer relations with Vladimir Putin than Matthias Warnig. They have met many times since the 1990s, hunting, fishing and walking together.
After the start of the military operation, Germany stopped the certification of Nord Stream, and the United States added Nord Stream 2 AG to the sanctions list. In September 2022, explosions occurred at Nord Stream 1 and the uncommissioned Nord Stream 2. Three out of four pipelines were damaged, and gas leaks occurred. Most foreign investors of the gas pipeline operator written off their shares in the business.
Authorities in Germany, Sweden and Denmark are investigating the explosions. Russia considers them an act of international terrorism. The New York Times, citing intelligence, reported that the explosions were staged by a pro-Ukrainian group. Ukraine this information denies.
