The number of super-cheap drugs in pharmacies has decreased

According to DSM Group, in 2022, the number of the cheapest drugs in Russian pharmacies has decreased. Pharmaceutical retailers presented 2402 types of drugs costing up to 50 rubles. This is 41% less than a year earlier and half as much as in 2020, follows from DSM Group data.
Drugs such as amlocardin (used for arterial hypertension, cost – 45.3 rubles), glycerin + boric acid (antiseptic, 24.8 rubles), veronakrap (used for bleeding and hemorrhages, 42 rubles) disappeared from the pharmaceutical retail. The latter, according to the State Register of Medicines (GRLS), has analogues.
Medicines in the price range from 50 rubles. up to 100 rubles last year there were 3,334 items, which is 7% less than the year before last, the decrease by 2020 was 15%. But the number of drugs costing more than 100 rubles. for the year increased by 3% compared to 2021 and by 10.4% compared to 2020 to 15,943 positions.
The reduction in sales of cheap drugs may be due to their transition to a higher price category against the backdrop of inflation, says Nikolay Bespalov, director of development at the analytical company RNC Pharma. According to the DSM Group, inflation for medicines included in the list of vital drugs was 1% at the end of the year, while for all others it was 12.5%.
Some companies purposefully produce medicines in the ultra-cheap price segment, planning to earn from sales volumes, explains Bespalov, citing the example of “Rinostop” from the company “Pharmstandard“. At the same time, according to the executive director of the pharmaceutical company Ozon Pharmaceuticals Andrey Gorshkov, neither manufacturers nor consumers need ultra-cheap drugs. For the former, the main problem is their low profitability, while the latter, having no specialized knowledge, prefer to buy more expensive drugs, believing that they are of high quality.
