The New York Times is ditching its own sports newsroom

Today, July 10, American publishing house The New York Times, which publishes the newspaper of the same name, announced that it would dissolve its own sports news department. The newspaper will cover sporting events with the help of the specialized portal The Athletic, which it acquired last year for $550 million.
The New York Times Editor-in-Chief Joe Kahn said the changes announced today represent “an evolution in the way we cover sports.”
The Athletic employs about 400 journalists who cover the activities of about 200 professional teams and athletes and publish about 150 stories a day. The New York Times’ own sports news department has 35 reporters and editors. The newspaper notes that all these employees will take other positions, such as in the business news department, covering sports from a business point of view, so no layoffs or layoffs are planned.
