From 2025, Russian Railways (RZD) will need more than 1 thousand locomotives per year for freight traffic. This was stated by Sergei Galkin, Deputy Director of the Management Department of the “Railway Transportation and Infrastructure” business block of Russian Railways, reports TASS.
“We understand that from 2025, the purchase of locomotives will need to be supplied not at 600, but at more than 1,000 locomotives per year,” he said at the round table “Increasing the transportation capacity of the railway to use the potential of the Vanino ports.”
As Mr. Galkin noted, “due to the general economic situation,” the contractor that supplies the rolling stock put forward additional conditions for increasing production, which he did not specify.
It is also planned to re-evaluate future contracts. In 2023, Russian Railways plans to purchase 600 locomotives. 402 units have already been received.
Loading through the Russian Railways network in August increased by 0.1% compared to last year and amounted to 103.7 million tons. Russian Railways expected a 2.5% reduction in loading by the end of 2023, but in the spring they began to focus on at least maintaining the indicators. According to analysts, an increase in the indicator is possible, but the situation is complicated by a decrease in the technical readiness of locomotives with imported parts and an increase in construction work.
