The mysterious city of the artist will open in the desert 50 years after the start of construction

“The City,” a sprawling array of outdoor structures and land masses that artist Michael Heizer began building in the Nevada desert in 1970, will finally open to visitors next month. The opening of the facility will take place on September 2, more than 50 years after work began at the facility, marking the end of Heizer’s most ambitious and career-defining project.
The “City” has been described as possibly the largest contemporary work of art on the planet, stretching over a mile and a half long and half a mile wide, evoking the scale of ancient sites such as Native American burial mounds, Mesoamerican metropolitan areas and Egyptian religious complexes. It is located in a remote Basin and Range National Monument in central eastern Nevada, in the ancestral lands of the Nuuvoo (Southern Paiute) and New (Western Shoshone), about 160 miles north of Las Vegas.
During the first year of public access, only a limited number of visitors will be admitted with mandatory pre-registration. CNN.
