President Vladimir Putin said that the first route of the high-speed railway between Moscow and St. Petersburg will pass through Tver and Veliky Novgorod. He also confirmed plans for the construction of high-speed lines to various cities, including Minsk.
“The first route between Moscow and St. Petersburg will pass through Tver and our ancient capital Veliky Novgorod. Then we will build a highway to Kazan and the Urals, Rostov-on-Don, the Black Sea coast, Minsk, fraternal Belarus, and other popular destinations,” the head of state said in his message to the Federal Assembly.
On the need to implement a high-speed highway project between Moscow and St. Petersburg Vladimir Putin stated in 2023. Complete construction and launch traffic on the HSR are planning by 2028. It is expected that due to the highway, travel time between Moscow and St. Petersburg will be reduced to 2 hours 15 minutes. Trains on the HSR will run at a frequency of 10–15 minutes. The launch of the expressway should reduce the cost of travel from St. Petersburg to Moscow by 18%.
In August last year, the president proposed bringing the high-speed railway to Lugansk and Donetsk, and also outlined other highways for the future: from Moscow to Adler, from Moscow through Kazan to the Urals, as well as the possible construction of the high-speed railway to Minsk.
