The Ministry of Internal Affairs warned about a scheme to steal money from bank cards through SBP – Kommersant

Fraudsters in Russia have begun to actively use a new criminal scheme implemented through the Fast Payment System (FPS), told official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation Irina Volk.

According to her, a potential victim leaves a request to purchase a product in an online store, after which the buyer receives a call or message in the messenger from a person who introduces himself as an employee of this store. The scammer, disguised as a seller, reports that the product can be purchased at a discount, but only if paid through the Fast Payment System using a QR code. If the buyer pays for the purchase using this QR code, the money is sent to the attacker’s account.

Ms. Volk emphasized that the implementation of such a fraudulent scheme is possible when the credentials of moderators and administrators of such sites are compromised. To avoid this, an official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation advised communicating with the support services of online stores only on official websites or in official applications.

Earlier in the Central Bank of the Russian Federation reportedthat when communicating with Russians, scammers most often introduce themselves as employees of law enforcement agencies or the Bank of Russia during a telephone conversation or in correspondence in the messenger. In addition, they send fake IDs to citizens.

In December 2023, it became known that the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, together with Roskomnadzor, was preparing an initiative to revoke licenses from telecom operators that miss fraudulent calls. We are talking about amendments to the Law “On Communications”. However, the Ministry of Digital Development of Russia, which is also responsible for combating telephone fraud, has not yet taken part in the work on the initiative, and operators have expressed concerns about the opacity of such reviews.
