The Ministry of Industry and Trade did not support the inclusion of medicines from India in parallel imports

The Ministry of Industry and Trade opposes the inclusion of Indian medicines in the list of permitted goods for parallel import, since this could negatively affect the health of Russians. This is stated in the response of the deputy head of the department, Ekaterina Priezzheva, to the appeal of the State Duma Deputy Speaker Vladislav Davankov (“New People”), transmits TASS.
“With regard to the issue of possible parallel import of medicines and medical products from the Republic of India, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia is against the inclusion of these products in the list of goods, as this may negatively affect the quality and safety and lead to serious consequences for the life and health of citizens of the Russian Federation,” – stated in the document.
The Ministry of Economic Development noted that India is one of the main suppliers of medicines to Russia. According to the department, in 2022, drugs worth more than $567 million were imported. At the same time, the ministry pointed out that the issue of the quality of drugs from India remains relevant, since in 2022 the share of seized substandard drugs was 48.3% versus 35. 1% in 2021
FAS stated that medicines and medical products are not included in parallel imports.
Davankov came up with the initiative to purchase Indian medicines for rupees as part of parallel imports in August, TASS notes. He sent such a letter to Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov. The deputy expressed this idea against the backdrop of a statement by former Russian Finance Minister Mikhail Zadornov, who named stuck rupees in company accounts is one of the “unobvious reasons for the weakening” of the ruble.
The Ministry of Energy later rejected the connection between the problem of converting rupees and the ruble exchange rate. “Oil companies return most of the foreign exchange earnings that originate in Russia, regardless of the currency of payment. The delays are not systemic in nature,” emphasized there.
