The Russian Ministry of Energy proposes to increase tariffs for cryptocurrency miners in energy-scarce areas. According to the deputy head of the department, Pavel Snikkars, increased tariffs for miners may begin to take effect in 2024.
The official called the goal of increasing tariffs “the movement of miners to energy-proficient areas.” According to him, tariffs for miners in areas where there is a shortage of electricity could be increased “two, five or more times.”
“We want to make differentiated tariffs for certain categories of consumers. That is, tariff differentiation is possible, for this we will change the government act and provide for this possibility,” said Mr. Snikkars on the sidelines of the “Russian Energy Week” forum (quote from TASS).
Earlier Kommersant sources reportedthat the increase in tariffs may affect a number of regions of Buryatia, the Trans-Baikal Territory and the Irkutsk region, where, due to low tariffs, a significant part of the cryptocurrency mining farms are located. Sources in the Ministry of Energy reported that the department hopes that rising tariffs will force them to move to other regions.
