The organization for the protection of consumer rights “Public Consumer Initiative” appealed to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation with a request to conduct comprehensive unscheduled inspections of the warehouses of the largest marketplaces. This is due to “objective fire safety problems.” Wildberries and Ozon previously had large fires in their warehouses.
A letter to the Ministry of Emergency Situations was sent by the chairman of the organization, deputy chairman of the public council under Rospotrebnadzor Oleg Pavlov, reports “Vedomosti”. He noted that in December 2023, Wildberries had 6.5 times more warnings from the Ministry of Emergency Situations “about the inadmissibility of violating mandatory requirements” than in the past 11 months, and 26 times more than in December 2022. A significant part of the violations concerns the joint storage of pyrotechnic products in warehouses with other goods, including flammable substances. Ozon received almost 16 times more warnings in November and December than in the previous 10 months.
In addition, the Public Consumer Initiative asked the Ministry of Emergency Situations for assistance in adjusting the moratorium on business inspections. It is valid until the end of 2024.
A Wildberries representative told Vedomosti that the company is ready to demonstrate the functionality of fire safety systems in warehouses in the event of inspections. It is alleged that the marketplace is strengthening fire safety measures and conducting internal audits. An Ozon representative noted that the company does not interfere with inspections by supervisory authorities. According to him, each logistics facility is equipped with the necessary fire protection systems.
Fire at the Wildberries warehouse in the village of Shushary, Pushkinsky district of St. Petersburg happened on the morning of January 13, 2024. Its area was 70 thousand square meters. m.
