The Ministry of Economic Development has developed a draft government decree, which provides for an increase in the rates of import customs duties on imports of wines from unfriendly countries from 12.5% to 20%, but not less than $1.5 per liter. This was reported to Vedomosti by a federal official familiar with the text of the document. According to him, the size of the rate was calculated in such a way “that this measure would be sensitive as a counter-sanction.” At the same time, the government has not yet made a final decision on the document, he specified.
A representative of the Ministry of Finance told Vedomosti that the increase in duties was being worked out by the commission on customs and tariff regulation under the Ministry of Economics “to protect domestic producers.” The key in working out this issue was the need to develop a balanced solution that would not lead to a significant increase in prices for consumers, he said. The parameters that are being discussed now “enable to maintain price stability on the Russian wine market.” The size of the rate was determined based on the results of elaboration with all interested departments, he added.
