The Ministry of Agriculture proposed to temporarily ban the export of certain types of poultry meat and eggs

Ministry of Agriculture of Russia suggested temporarily ban the export of certain types of poultry meat to curb price increases and prevent shortages in the domestic market. The ban may come into force in December 2023. The department also proposes to ban the export of chicken eggs.

As noted in the draft government resolution prepared by the ministry, the ban, if introduced, will be in effect for six months. The export of which types of meat should be prohibited is not specified.

The Ministry of Agriculture emphasized that poultry meat has risen in price in Russia by 25.3% compared to 2022. The ministry believes that this is due to a decrease in production volumes in recent months and an increase in its cost against the backdrop of a high dollar exchange rate.

In addition, in order to stabilize prices, the Ministry proposes to ban the sale of edible chicken eggs abroad for a period of six months; the Ministry of Agriculture has already submitted a corresponding draft government resolution for discussion.

The day before, October 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin during a government meeting statedthat since the beginning of the year, prices for poultry meat have increased by more than 27%. According to him, the Ministry of Agriculture needs to purchase products from friendly countries to stabilize prices. The head of the department, Dmitry Patrushev, responded by saying that procurement is already underway, meat is being bought in Kazakhstan and Belarus.

October 24 Mr. Patrushev called take measures to prevent the acceleration of food inflation in the country. According to him, agricultural enterprises must uninterruptedly supply stores with quality products “at reasonable prices.”
