In September 2023, the volume of shares sold by friendly non-residents became the largest since February 2022 and reached RUB 32 billion. This is more than the total volume of shares they sold during the period from January to August 2023. This is stated in the review of financial market risks of the Central Bank (.pdf).

“The main sellers were non-residents from friendly countries, who significantly increased sales volumes (in the amount of 32.0 billion rubles), while a month earlier they made minor purchases – 0.2 billion rubles,” says the Central Bank’s review.

At the same time, over the eight months of 2023, the volume of securities sold by friendly non-residents amounted to 22.8 billion rubles.

In September, non-credit financial organizations sold shares as part of trust management. At the same time, sales volumes decreased by one and a half times compared to August figures, to 17.9 billion rubles. (in August – by 27.7 billion rubles).

The release emphasizes that “the market was supported, as a month earlier, by individuals.” They are still the main participants in the stock market of Russian companies. Despite the fact that the volume of securities purchased by retail investors in September fell by 25%, to RUB 29.4 billion. they continue to be the largest net buyers.
