How did the trailer for “Rings of Power” turn out?

The video is almost 3 minutes long. Of all the trailers for the new adaptation of Tolkien, this one turned out to be the longest and richest: it found a place for plot exposition, frames with large-scale locations, and battle scenes.

In terms of the quality of the visuals, artwork and staging, the final trailer was head and shoulders above its predecessors. It can be seen that, at least in part, the studio listened to the criticism from the fans and worked to ensure that it was impossible to find fault with the beauty of the frames.

On the other hand, the choice of musical arrangement raises big questions. The soundtrack was the song “Breathe” by the popular British duo “Ex Makina”, which mainly makes electronic music. No matter how talented the British are, is it necessary to say that modern electronic music, in principle, is not very suitable for dark fantasy in a medieval style? Because of the track in the background, there is a feeling that we are not facing the story of the Middle-earth’s confrontation with the ancient forces of darkness, but some kind of strange melodrama. And the funniest thing about the soundtrack story is that all the music for Rings of Power has already been posted online, and there is nothing even close to the tracks of Ex Makina in it, only very atmospheric orchestral compositions. Why, in this case, it was necessary to add “Breathe” to the trailer, again, it is not clear.

What exactly was shown in the trailer for “Rings of Power”

As for the content of the video itself, here we were again given indirect confirmation that Galadriel will become the central character of the series. Not only does she feel the need to fight Sauron more than any other character, but simply by the timing in these 3 minutes of scenes with her, it turned out to be more than any other. Apparently, her brother will die in battle with the orcs of the Dark Lord, the scene of his death appears at the very beginning of the trailer. After the grief experienced, the elven warrior decides to declare a personal war on the killer, which her relatives will not support.

Also in the trailer, a lot of attention was paid to the episode of the passage of the Galadriel detachment through the Misty Mountains. In previous videos, these scenes also flashed, but in a very truncated form. Here you can see that this transition will take a lot of time and will cost the lives of many elves, because from scene to scene, the squad members are getting smaller. Also right in the video, Galadriel says that she is ready to leave her comrades for the sake of continuing the mission. This gives us an indirect hint that her desire for revenge against Sauron will be associated with the internal conflict of the character.

For the first time they showed a hero named Halbron, a warrior from the realm of people. According to the plot, he suffered some kind of shipwreck, which is hinted at by the scene in which he finds himself in the middle of the sea in a storm on a wooden shipwreck. Later, he will apparently join the elf on her military campaign, as evidenced by their joint scenes in battle armor. For the series, he is a completely new character, so it’s impossible to say anything more about his role yet.

Once again, the hobbits were shown. They turned out to be just as strangely dirty as in the previous videos, and, in fact, these shots did not add anything to our idea of ​​\u200b\u200bthem in the series. It is not yet clear what role they will play in this story: will they all be the same important characters as in the films of Peter Jackson, or will their role in the war be only secondary, as in the books.

Also, several shots were dedicated to the Dwarf King Durin IV and his sister, Princess Disa. In the past, Disa caused serious scandals in the fan communities, because an African-American actress was cast in her role. However, as in the case of the hobbits, it is impossible to say that the trailer somehow revealed these characters in a new way. The princess simply tells her brother that he has the great honor of leading the kingdom during the war.

Large-scale locations of the future series were shown a little more, for example, the same Misty Mountains and the city of the dwarves Khazad-Dum, located in the depths of these mountains, the ports of the island of Numenor, the Great Sea, which, according to the canon, is located west of Middle-earth. These iconic locations from Tolkien’s novels now seem to be worked out to the smallest detail, and perhaps at least in this field the series can stand on a par with Jackson’s films.

Fighting scenes were demonstrated for the first time: the water battle with the Sea Dragon in the Great Sea, the battle of Galadriel with the ogres of Sauron and the fighting tricks of the elf Arondir, who, being chained, jumps with an ax to deal with his captors. These individual action scenes look pretty good. Also, just for a second, we were shown the battle of the army of elves and orcs, and so far the most questions have arisen to it. The orcs fall very strangely from the elves passing by, as if by magic, no touch is visible in the frame.

What viewers think of the Rings of Power trailer

Ever since the announcement, the series has been disliked for its rather disregard for the Tolkien canon, a whole mountain of scandals with actors, poor production and much more. The new video, although it came out clearly of better quality than all the previous ones, still could not even calm the storm of fan negativity:

“I really hope that there are REAL HEROES who can still make a worthy series on the world of Tolkien as it is. And this is just childish babble that does not deserve any attention.

“Everything is so artificial … You look and do not believe either the actors or the environment. The case when no money helps.

These are just a couple of the thousands of negative comments that viewers have written under the trader. Although they may seem somewhat biased, in fact, the creators did not bother at all to change their aggressive skepticism to mercy in any way. For a long time, Amazon producers shoved footage into trailers that completely contradicted the lore, disrespected Tolkien’s novels, and even set the premiere date for The Rings of Power on the day of the professor’s death, September 2nd. It can be said that Amazon deliberately and personally infuriated fans.

Of course, you can’t judge a book by its cover, but so far, the future of this show doesn’t look very bright. However, according to critics, it is still not worth getting upset ahead of time.

What critics say about “Rings of Power”

Perhaps all is not lost for the new series in the Middle-earth universe. Recently, representatives of several major publications were allowed to watch the first 2 episodes of 8, and they were satisfied with what they saw.

Almost all reviewers noted the depth of work on the visuals of the series, which turned out to be not only beautiful, but also very large-scale and atmospheric:

“Yes, the visuals are as stunning as promised in the trailer. And well sets the stage for an epic story.”

The plot seemed more ambiguous to them. Not all of the characters came out equally compelling, some were interesting to follow, while others were very annoying. Specifically, the story and image of Galadriel, performed by the Swedish actress Morveth Clark, was still liked by the majority.

Interestingly, many authors agreed that, despite all the pre-premiere negativity, fans will like the series and they will want to see more. Critics admitted that they were also skeptical, but in the end the show surprised them very much and turned out to be excellent.
