“Portrait of Fraulein Lieser” is valued at 50 million euros
A painting by Gustav Klimt was shown in Vienna, which disappeared from the field of view of specialists for almost 100 years. The artist began painting “Portrait of Fraulein Lieser” in 1917, but did not have time to finish it. In February 1918 he died. There is no signature on the canvas. But experts have no doubt that this is indeed Klimt. The Kinsky auction house, where the owner of the painting contacted, stated that “a painting of such rarity, artistic significance and value has not been on the European art market for several decades.”
After the death of Gustav Klimt, the family of Jewish industrialists who commissioned the portrait took the work from the studio. In 1925, the painting was shown in a Vienna gallery. A black and white photo from the exhibition has survived. After which the work disappeared from view for decades. As it turned out, in the 1960s the heirs sold it to a certain Austrian citizen.
In 2020, he or his descendants approached the Vienna auction house Kinsky. Apparently, they spent two years studying the work and its history to ensure the authenticity of the work.
The painting will be put up for sale on April 24. It is valued at 50 million euros. However, the latest work by the author of the famous “The Kiss,” who became an icon of the Art Nouveau style, is expected to sell for more. After the sale, the painting will most likely be exhibited publicly at an exhibition, which is sure to create a sensation and arouse great interest.
