The Sukhumi plant of Wines and Waters of Abkhazia LLC suspended work due to the introduction of an excise tax by the government of the republic. This was announced by the chief winemaker of the enterprise, Valery Avidzba. He noted that the decision is temporary; the plant’s management is negotiating with the government to abolish the tax.

“The Cabinet of Ministers decided to introduce a 30% excise tax on wine materials imported into the republic. This will have a negative impact on wine production, since it significantly increases the cost of our products,” Valery Avidzba told reporters (quoted from “Interfax”).

According to him, distributors warned that they would not be able to sell goods if the plant raised prices for products. “And we hope that in the near future the problem will be resolved and the Cabinet of Ministers will cancel the decision it made,” noted Mr. Avidzba.

LLC Wines and Waters of Abkhazia supplies 17 types of wines and cognacs to the Russian market. In particular, the plant produces wines “Lykhny”, “Psou”, “Radeda”, “Amra” and cognacs “Abkhazia” and “Ainar”. Factory produces up to 28 million bottles per year and is the largest supplier of Abkhaz wines on the Russian market.
