ALROSA mined the largest gem-quality diamond in Russia over the past 10 years in Yakutia. Its weight is 390.7 carats. The last time a large diamond was found was in 2013, its weight was 401 carats.
The diamond was mined in the Mayat mine in the Anabar region. It is a light crystal of a non-standard shape, bordered by a yellow-brown halo, ALROSA said in a message on Telegram. “A unique combination of mass, shape and color today,” notes the company.
The diamond was discovered during night washing of diamond-bearing sands at the Ebelyakh site. Along with it, a large colorless diamond weighing 37.7 carats with a classic octahedral shape was also found. Both are aimed at expert assessment of morphological characteristics. ALROSA General Director Pavel Marinychev noted that the potential and characteristics of the diamond have yet to be studied, but “without a doubt, this is a record holder both for our company and for the country’s diamond industry.”
