The head of the Russian Presidential Administration for Public Projects, Sergei Novikov, noted the merits of Valery Gergiev in solving the “personnel problem” at the Mariinsky Theater, which he has headed since 1996. The day before, on December 1, Mr. Gergiev was also appointed to the post of head of the Bolshoi Theater.
“Valery Gergiev has today been appointed director of the Bolshoi Theater. He solved his personnel problem long ago. They realized at the Mariinsky Theater that no one would save them, they created the Academy of Young Singers, and people come there to study,” Mr. Novikov told reporters (quoted from “RIA News”). He noted that students at the academy first sing in an ensemble, they participate together with masters in performances on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater and then make a solo career.
Order on the appointment of Valery Gergiev signed Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. The decision was made for five years. Vladimir Urin, who headed the Bolshoi Theater since 2013, resigned from his post of his own free will.
