The Kremlin Museums will tell about the falsification of ancient Russian history

The exhibition features items that helped Moscow proclaim itself the “Third Rome”

Director of the Moscow Kremlin Museums Elena Gagarina spoke about the exhibition plans. They had to be heavily redrawn due to recent events, because the exposition program is being formed ahead of time, but the sanctions and the general political situation in the world left no choice.

Among other things, the project “Legendary Relics of the Armory” will be presented, which tells how the Russian monarchy attributed various relics to important historical figures.

A number of legends are associated with the name of Sophia Paleolog. Thanks to the marriage of Ivan III to the niece of the last emperor of the Byzantine Empire, Constantine XI, the thesis “Moscow is the Third Rome” appeared. Then many legends were born that support the idea of ​​the succession of Russia from Byzantium, and many objects were endowed with a history corresponding to the necessary political doctrine.

The second wave of historical falsifications occurred in the 19th century and was associated with a surge of interest in ancient Russian history. “We will explain for what purpose some things were passed off as others, how and why this was done,” Elena Gagarina said at a press conference.

In addition, the Kremlin Museums will present a project dedicated to Russian soldiers, as well as an exhibition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the USSR “Chicherin and Soviet Diplomacy”.

There will be a major regional project: the Chelyabinsk State Historical Museum of the Southern Urals will show the exhibition “Carl Faberge and Russian jewelers of the 19th-21st centuries.”

Elena Gagarina also said that the construction of a new museum space in the Middle Trading Rows is going according to plan, but there are problems with equipping the building. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. But due to the current situation, there are obstacles associated with the arrangement of the new building.

“There is a big problem with showcases for exhibits. They were made in the UK, this work is now difficult to continue. We took a break and are now deciding what to do next,” said the director of the Moscow Kremlin Museums.
