Equipping the Russian passenger aircraft Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) with domestic PD-8 engines instead of the Franco-Russian SaM146 is comparable to the residual value of this aircraft. This was announced by the head of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Yuri Slyusar.

According to Mr. Slyusar, the replacement of the engine is possible, but it is associated with economic difficulties, in particular due to the high cost of the PD-8.

“Therefore, with the residual value of the aircraft, for example, 500 million rubles. it will be necessary for a comparable amount – if not more – to buy new components as well, ”said Vedomosti head of the UAC.

According to him, the airlines want Russia to learn how to overhaul the SaM146. At the moment, Russian specialists are mastering the hot part (gas generator) of this engine.

Yuri Slyusar said that there are still several dozen SaM146 engines in reserve. But they are not planned to be installed on the imported SSJ New, since these engines are needed to maintain the existing fleet in good condition.

SaM146 was created jointly by the French concern Safran and the Russian NPO Saturn (part of the UEC Rostec). Repair of the hot part of the engine was carried out only in France. The Russian PD-8 from UEC-Saturn is supposed to replace the SaM146 in new aircraft, but has not yet been certified.

According to aviation expert Alexei Komarov, Safran was responsible for the technologically most complex part of the engine, where the fuel is burned. These technologies were not transferred to Russia. According to Mr. Komarov, the hot section turbine, combustion chambers and other elements require very high technology.

Work on the production of prototypes of the SSJ New with PD-8 engines is planned to be completed in 2022 and 2023. The minimum cost of SSJ New for Aeroflot will amount to 2.256 billion rubles, follows from the investment project for preferential leasing of Russian aircraft. Now Russian carriers have 150 SSJ100 aircraft.
