The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, believes that the operating life of nuclear power plants in the European Union needs to be extended. She linked this to achieving climate change goals.

“Extending the safe operation of the existing nuclear fleet is one of the cheapest ways to provide clean energy,” Ms von der Leyen said (quoted by Reuters). She added that nuclear technology faces funding challenges, increasing budgets and delayed commissioning dates.

The Russian nuclear industry is not subject to European sanctions. International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Grossi in February saidthat such a solution would be impractical, since Western countries depend on supplies of enriched uranium and fuel from the Russian Federation. According to the head of the IAEA, reducing dependence would cost Europe billions.

About the situation with European nuclear energy – in the Kommersant article “European energy is balancing on the brink of renewable energy sources.”
