The head of Naftogaz proposed to switch to heating with garbage

The head of the board of the Ukrainian Naftogaz, Yuriy Vitrenko, said that next season it is planned to abandon the use of gas for central heating. According to him, as an alternative to gas, it is possible to switch to heating with biomass and garbage.
Mr. Vitrenko at a briefing said that in Zhytomyr they intend to build three thermal power plants that will operate on RDF (refuse derived fuel, solid secondary fuel, in fact – household waste) and wood chips. Their capacity will be 50 MW. Yuriy Vitrenko explained that it is more profitable to launch such projects than to import gas.
“We want to install equipment that will then work for many years on local raw materials, and this is the development of local business and the creation of jobs,” said the head of Naftogaz, quoted by Ukrinform. Mr. Vitrenko believes that it is necessary to quickly switch from natural gas to biomass, alternative sources and heat pumps, since at the market price for gas, the payback period for such projects is two to three months.
In 2019, Naftogaz and Gazprom signed five-year gas transit contract. According to the Ukrainian side, with a base pumping volume of 225 billion cubic meters. m Gazprom will pay $7.2 billion. In May 2022, the operator of the gas transmission network of Ukraine suspended supply of Russian gas through the Sokhranovka gas measuring station, citing force majeure circumstances. In September, Naftogaz sued to Gazprom in international arbitration.
