Director General of the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) Dmitry Rylko during a meeting of Rosptitsesoyuz said that the content of mycotoxins in Russian corn of the 2022-2023 season “breaks all possible and impossible records”, the newspaper reports. Vedomosti.
Mycotoxins are natural contaminants of cereal grains, legumes, sunflower seeds, as well as vegetables and fruits. They can be formed under the influence of microscopic fungi developing in the production. Mycotoxins pose health risks to livestock and poultry.
According to Mr. Rylko, the increased level of mycotoxins in corn is caused by difficulties with harvesting in the center of the country, the Volga region and Western Siberia. He stated that corn remained in the fields for a long time due to adverse weather conditions. There is a lot of it, but there are serious problems with it, the head of IKAR added.
A representative of the Rosselkhoznadzor told the newspaper that a high concentration of mycotoxins was recorded in the Lipetsk, Tambov, and Belgorod regions. At the same time, he noted that the Center for Grain Quality Assessment (under the jurisdiction of Rosselkhoznadzor) found a decrease in the volume of mycotoxin detections by 27%.
A representative of the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed to the publication that last year the corn harvest took place in a number of regions in adverse weather conditions.
