The grave of Lermontov’s muse will be repaired at the Vagankovsky cemetery

The grave of Mikhail Lermontov’s muse, Natalya Fedorovna Obreskova (Ivanova), will be restored in Moscow. The burial of the poet’s beloved, to whom he dedicated a cycle of poems of 1830-1832, is located at the Vagankovsky cemetery.

As MK found out, experts will put in order the burial of Lermontov’s contemporary, whose image left an indelible mark on the poet’s soul. Today, the tombstone at the Vagankovsky cemetery is a massive four-pointed cross, mounted on a pedestal in the form of a Calvary.

The foundation under the monument has been lost. On the cross and Calvary there are inscriptions made in Church Slavonic and civil script. The condition of the monument itself leaves much to be desired: on all surfaces, experts noted hard-to-remove dirt, chips, and cracks.

Specialists will first dismantle the monument, then they will work on laying the foundation of the monument, clearing the cross; recreate the sandstone base, return the cross, and fix the steel fence. Landscaping of the burial ground with planting of perennial plants will also be carried out.

Natalya Ivanova (Obreskova) is the daughter of the Moscow writer and playwright Fyodor Ivanov and Ekaterina Kosheleva. At the end of 1830, 16-year-old Lermontov visited their estate, where he met 17-year-old Natalya.

In 1831, Lermontov wrote in his diary: “I will go … I will see Natasha, this angel!” Lermontov devoted about 40 poems to Ivanova, which made up the “Ivanovka cycle” of his love lyrics.

Later, describing the portrait of Natalia, Lermontov calls her “an insensitive, cold deity.” In the mid-1830s, Natalya Fedorovna married Nikolai Mikhailovich Obreskov, a man deprived of his noble rank due to a jewelry theft scandal. The couple had four children. Obreskova died in 1875.
