The Russian government may oblige retailers to pre-install the Russian operating system (OS) on all laptops and personal computers imported into the country, a source in the Cabinet told Kommersant.
According to the government, this measure will help avoid security problems supplied by parallel import devices on Windows that do not receive updates. The government wants to shift responsibility for installing Russian software from manufacturers to retailers.
“The Russian OS should become additional. The document can be submitted to the government this quarter, ”said the interlocutor of Kommersant in the Russian government.
Against the background of the growth in deliveries to Russia of foreign laptops without an operating system, the Ministry of Digital Transformation announced in the middle of last year that it was considering the option of making pre-installation of the domestic OS on these devices mandatory. In November, the ministry singled out three systems following a survey: Astra Linux OS (Astra Group), Viola OS (Basalt SPO) and Red OS (Red Soft). All three are based on Linux.
Earlier it became known that foreign manufacturers of smartphones started pre-install the Russian app store RuStore on smartphones. In particular, we are talking about Xiaomi, Vivo, Realme, Infinix and Itel equipment. Also, the pre-installation of RuStore on smartphones was confirmed by a representative of the Chinese Tecno.
