The government of Ukraine nationalized the former Alfa-Bank Ukraine

The government of Ukraine adopted a resolution by which it nationalized the former “Alfa Bank Ukraine” – Sense Bank. This was reported on the website of the Cabinet.
The statement clarifies that the nationalization of the bank will not affect the fulfillment of obligations to depositors and customers, but such a step is “necessary to preserve the stability of the banking system.” Sense Bank will come under the control of the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, and new management will be appointed as soon as possible.
At the same time, the report says that after the end of martial law, the Ministry of Finance will attract investors to sell the bank.
The process of nationalization of Alfa-Bank Ukraine began in 2022. In December, it was renamed Sense Bank. Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Mykhailo Podolyak informedthat the nationalization of the bank will be less difficult than the nationalization of Privatbank by businessman Igor Kolomoisky, which took place in 2016. This is due to the smaller number of individuals who have deposits in this bank.
At the end of October, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree, according to which the nationalization of systemically important banks is allowed during the period of martial law. These include 14 banks, including the former “Alfa Bank Ukraine”.
