The Government of the Russian Federation will allocate about 44 billion rubles for the production of aircraft engines

The government will allocate more than 44 billion rubles to expand the production of aircraft engines for the entire line of Russian civil and military transport aircraft. Federal funds will be directed to the United Engine Corporation (UEC; part of Rostec). This was stated by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin during meetings with vice-premiers.

By expanding the production of domestic engines, the government wants to reduce the dependence of air transport on foreign materials, components and equipment, Mr. Mishustin said. He stressed that it is important for Russian airlines to maintain the ability to renew their fleet with Russian designs.

According to the Prime Minister, the industry has “very clear” objectives. Within two years, it is necessary to produce about fifty PD-8 engines for Superjets, twenty PS-90A for medium-haul Tu-214s and fourteen PD-14s for the “future flagship of Russian aviation” MS-21. It is also planned to carry out research on the PD-35 high-thrust engine and complete the development and creation of its prototype by the end of 2024.

September 21 Russian President Vladimir Putin declaredthat, thanks to the sanctions, Russia itself will produce engines for civil aviation. In response to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, the European Union imposed sanctions against the Russian aviation industry, which deprived Russian airlines of the opportunity to use European aircraft. New deliveries, as well as maintenance and insurance of all aircraft, were banned, and aircraft already leased under old contracts had to be returned to the lessor within a month.
