The Russian government has allowed Globus, a subsidiary of S7 Airlines, to return two Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft to the lessor. The order, signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, published on the official portal of legal information.
“To allow Globus LLC until December 31, 2022 inclusively, to export goods outside the territory of Russia to the Republic of Turkey according to the list according to the appendix,” the document says.
TASS with reference to the press service of S7 informedthat the aircraft will be returned to the lessor, Turkey is chosen as the most convenient point for the transfer.
Kommersant July 1 informedthat S7 Airlines and Airbridgeсargo (part of Volga-Dnepr Group of Companies) filed a petition with the Ministry of Transport to return their aircraft to lessors. The first company plans to return the 737-8 MAX due to “the lack of a type B certificate in the Russian Federation and, accordingly, the impossibility of its operation.” In turn, Airbridgecargo wants to return 14 out of 16 cargo Boeing 747s that are now in Sheremetyevo. According to experts, the return of the planes is more than justified, since the volume of the Russian market does not allow them to be used effectively.
On the same day, Minister of Transport Vitaly Savelyev informedthat 77 Russian aircraft were detained abroad, only one aircraft was returned.
After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the United States, Great Britain, the European Union and other countries closed their airspace to Russian aircraft. After the imposition of sanctions, foreign lessors began to demand that Russian companies return the aircraft. Also, companies stopped repairing such aircraft and supplying parts for them. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree according to which airlines must transfer lease payments in rubles to accounts in Russian banks. They also got the opportunity to re-register the aircraft in Russia in order to continue their operation.
