The journalist inaugurates this Thursday in the third part of the evening the new season of the magazine “We, the Europeans”. Filmed in Spain, the first issue focuses on inequalities between men and women.
“A show that really aims to be 100% on the ground. It’s important to show what’s going on elsewhere.”, explains Eléonore Gay enthusiastically. The journalist, who succeeded Francis Letellier last year, returns for her second season at the helm of “We, the Europeans” on France 2. According to the presenter, this twenty-minute magazine “grabs the news but deals with it through particularly inspiring personalities and initiatives”. The first issue starts Thursday, September 1.

This one entitled “The male of tomorrow”, highlights the Spanish actions for “reduce domestic violence as well as inequalities between men and women”. “We, the Europeans” is also broadcast every Sunday morning at 10:35 a.m. on France 3. A double place on the grid which makes it possible to reach two different audiences. The former deputy editorial director of France Télévisions confides in this magazine of which she says “ very proud” and which brings her back to her first love of field journalism.
LE FIGARO. –What can we expect from this third season of “We the Europeans”?
Eléonore GAY. – We will continue to discover our European neighbors and their resources in areas that concern the French. The goal is to share and be inspired by their ideas. We want to show positive things, people who take initiatives, find solutions. “We the Europeans” is interested in society, the economy, purchasing power. We must also continue to mention the Ukrainian conflict which upsets the balance of Europe.
Tell us about this back-to-school issue “The male of tomorrow”, shot in Spain…
It’s a good back-to-school number. The issues of the male/female relationship, abortion, menstrual leave, masculinity, stereotypes, some of which want to break free and others not, are topical and subject to debate. Spain turns out to be a surprising country. If he has the reputation of a macho culture, in reality he has caught up a lot and is daring! Through our reports, we show that Spain has become aware of the fight against domestic violence. In particular thanks to the creation of dedicated centres. On a lighter note, some places develop the reflection around paternity, masculinity via a comic strip for example, we see Batman himself ironing his cape! These initiatives have largely contributed to lowering the rate of feminicides. An interview with the Minister for Equality Irène Montero, who has a very proactive policy, completes our issue.
Introduce us to the team of “We, the Europeans”…
Our small team consists of an editor-in-chief and his deputy as well as two other journalists, the “killers” of the report (laughs)! They are really complementary and I am very happy to work with them. Their gaze, energy, empathy, playfulness and ability to convince allow us to obtain beautiful sequences. We also work regularly with journalists, regulars of the news, it brings a different writing.
How is a number constructed?
We rarely pre-record. We play ping-pong between our teams and the fixers on site. When the subjects touch the news, we do not want to record too early so as not to be overtaken by the information. In reporting, we leave with our cameraman, who has a very rock’n’roll vision of the exercise. It moves, nothing is frozen. We very often end the program two days before the broadcast, which is short!
Why did you agree to take control of this show two years ago?
She really embodies what public service can be. It’s also a great opportunity to be on the pitch. After having been a great reporter for a long time, I was deputy editorial director of France Télévisions for ten years. With the exception of a few special operations, I stayed within the offices. I couldn’t be happier to be back in the field, meeting people. How fortunate to be able to take to the field at such an intense pace. This represents the core of our business.
“We decipher Europe in a very human and accessible way”

On Twitter you said: “Promised in 2022, we will make you love Europe and Europeans even more than in 2021”. What image do the French have of Europe today?
The French have a rather contrasting image of Europe. On the one hand we recognize its beneficial aspect, on the other, this entity seems to us a little nebulous, even too complex. Let’s not forget that Europe, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia is a sufficient reminder of this, makes it possible to maintain peace on our continent. Not to mention the attention paid to human rights, free movement… We need to remember these very positive things. In our show, they are deciphered in a human and accessible way. We make them loved by talking about individuals, communities, villages…
Do you plan to expand the themes of the show internationally?
We have every reason to remain focused on Europe, which is a gigantic geographical, political and societal field. And exciting! Moreover, we are not confined to the European Union stricto sensu.
Would you like to create a debate supplement after the publication of each magazine?
This prospect could be interesting. I had already organized a debate, on Twitch, after an astonishing subject on Malta, an extremely Catholic country where abortion is still prohibited but where the LGBTQ+ cause is valued. After the show, we brought together a lawyer and a specialist in Europe. “We, the Europeans” allows people to project themselves. In reality, each of the programs could be followed by a debate.
