Kommersant learned that the global office of the German company SAP is preparing to sell computer equipment from its own data centers in Russia – a total of 3.5 thousand pieces of equipment. The book value of the equipment is 3 billion rubles, and the market value, taking into account depreciation, is about 1.4 billion rubles. According to Kommersant, Rostelecom, a longtime SAP partner in the development of data centers in Russia, is interested in buying equipment. The operator announced plans to invest 10-20 billion rubles in the development of regional data processing centers in the coming years.
Sources of “Kommersant” in the Russian market of cloud services said that the global office of the German SAP plans to sell all the computer equipment owned by the company in Russia. We are talking about servers, switches, data storage systems (SHD), a total of 3.5 thousand pieces of equipment.
According to one of Kommersant’s interlocutors, SAP intends to find a Russian partner to whom it will transfer the equipment, and he, in turn, will be engaged in the implementation.
The balance price of the equipment is €50 million (3 billion rubles at the exchange rate of the Central Bank on September 7), clarifies the Kommersant source. Another interlocutor of Kommersant emphasizes that the market value of the equipment was estimated at approximately 1.4 billion rubles. He says that Rostelecom is interested in the purchase. SAP CIS CEO Andrey Filatov declined to comment, and Rostelecom did the same. Kommersant sent a request to the SAP global office.
SAP — one of the largest in the world and the Russian Federation (about 60% of the market) suppliers of systems for enterprise resource management. SAP CIS is a division of the international company SAP SE. In 1992, the SAP office in Moscow was opened, follows from the information on the company’s website. According to kartoteka.ru, SAP CIS LLC was registered in 2002. According to the Federal Tax Service, the LLC’s revenue in 2021 amounted to 35 billion rubles, with a net profit of 1.3 billion rubles.
After the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, SAP actually curtailed work in the Russian Federation, retaining only the support of existing customers, and in June announced its intention to completely leave the market, retaining business in other countries of the former USSR. Tadviser’s sources reported that the Russian top management of SAP is negotiating with the German office to become an independent structure that will support products under already implemented contracts. This information was also confirmed by Kommersant’s interlocutors familiar with the situation in the company, specifying that the negotiations “have not yet progressed.”
SAP also owns several data processing centers (DPC) in Russia. The first one was opened in 2014 to provide cloud services on the territory of the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” in Moscow based on the infrastructure of Rostelecom. Since 2016, Rostelecom has entered into an agreement with SAP to promote its cloud solutions based on its data centers.
Now the Russian state-owned company is in dire need of computers. In June, Rostelecom froze the development of data centers in the regions due to a shortage of equipment (see “Kommersant” dated June 27), but at the end of August, the company’s president, Mikhail Oseevsky, told Interfax that the project would continue. As part of the Eastern Economic Forum on September 6, the top manager announced that Rostelecom would invest 10–20 billion rubles in regional data centers. for several years.
According to iKS-Consulting, the data center market in Russia in 2021 amounted to 55.8 thousand rack spaces, Rostelecom is the leader in it.
According to the CEO of the 3data data center network, Ilya Khala, now the acquisition of new equipment is “possible, but difficult” in terms of logistics and pricing, so used equipment may be of interest to a wide range of buyers: “We have purchased equipment, but if we now offered the former used equipment in good condition, the proposal would be considered.
Igor Dorofeev, president of the Association of Data Center Industry Participants, agrees that SAP equipment could potentially be of interest to Russian consumers, but with a good discount: “This is not a ready-made solution, but a zoo of equipment, to put it in order, the buyer needs serious competencies. In addition, it is not clear how fresh the equipment is: its cycle is about five years.” President of Zelax Sergey Sukhman believes that “if Rostelecom is interested in the equipment, then, probably, only to quickly close holes in the infrastructure.” In general, the top manager believes, it will rather attract sellers of used equipment.
