The Gate of Light and the Triangle of the Universe: contemporary art was shown against the backdrop of the pyramids

Third Forever Is Now exhibition opens on Giza Plateau

For the third time, a contemporary art exhibition has opened on the Giza Plateau. Two years ago, Alexander Ponomarev participated in this project called Forever Is Now, who presented his large-scale installation “Ouroboros”. Now it can be seen at the master’s personal exhibition in the Tretyakov Gallery. And new art objects by modern authors have appeared in the Egyptian desert. This year there are 14 of them. The theme of the current exhibition in the desert is the game.

The Egyptian pyramids are under the protection of UNESCO and the local government, so special permission was required to organize the contemporary art forum. It was received after several years of attempts to break through the idea. As a result, the exhibition of contemporary art has become a unique phenomenon; now every year it attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators.

The first project, in which the Russian artist Alexander Ponomarev became a participant, as well as the world’s first robot artist Ai-Da, was visited by half a million people. Last year, more than 800 thousand spectators admired contemporary art in the desert. More than a million visitors await here.

The curator of the exhibition, Nadine Abdel Ghaffar, this time invited the artists to fantasize on the theme “Game”. Among the participants in the open-air exhibition are the Belgian Arne Quinze, the Brazilian Arne Quinze, the Argentine artist Pilar Zeta, the Dutch Sabine Marcelis, the Egyptian author Sam Shandietz and other authors from different countries. Each created their own gaming installation, which interacts with cultural heritage dating back 4,500 years.

Arne Queens, for example, presented the installation “Gateway of Light”. His red, white and black aluminum arch sculpture frames one of the pyramids. It symbolizes the cyclical nature of life, nature, the cycle of day and night, emphasizing the importance of the sun in ancient Egyptian culture.

Stefana Breuer created the work “Observatory” in the form of an inverted golden pyramid, which creates an unusual optical illusion in the desert. This is a reflection on the connection between the Universe and humanity. Each viewer will see himself in the mirror reflection of the triangle of eternity. By the way, the same symbol can be found inside one of the ancient temples nearby.
