The first ship arrived in Kaliningrad via the Northern Sea Route (NSR). Governor of the Kaliningrad region Anton Alikhanov announced this in his Telegram channel.
The governor noted that the ship left Shanghai, then entered the Arkhangelsk port and then headed to Baltiysk (a city in the Kaliningrad region). The final point is St. Petersburg, noted Mr. Alikhanov. He emphasized that transport companies plan to develop this route, due to the fact that delivering goods “is cheaper and faster than through the Suez Canal.”
The Northern Sea Route is the shortest sea route from Europe to Asia. The routes of the Northern Sea Route lie in the waters of the Arctic seas and the southern part of the Arctic Ocean within the exclusive economic zone of Russia in the Arctic.
In September, Head of the Ministry of Eastern Development Alexey Chekunkov statedthat cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route remains high, but there is not enough ice-class fleet for its development. September 16, Rosatom reportedthat improved navigation conditions make it possible to safely operate ships on the NSR without an ice class in summer and autumn.
Under sanctions, Russian oil companies began to use the Northern Sea Route more often to transport Urals. According to Kommersant, in July and August, Rosneft and Gazprom Neft sent three oil cargoes from the Leningrad region to China via it.
