The first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997) by British writer JK Rowling, originally purchased for 30 cents, was sold at auction in Lichfield for 10.5 thousand pounds ($13.4 thousand). This was announced by the auction house Richard Winterton Auctioneers on Twitter.
In 1997, 500 copies of the book were printed. 300 of them were sent to libraries in the UK, 200 went on sale. According to The Guardianthe former owner of the auctioned copy, purchased it 25 years ago at a Wolverhampton library sale.
In 2017, the first edition of the Harry Potter book was sold at Bonhams auction house in London for 106,000 pounds ($140,000). In 2021, the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone sold for a record $471,000 at Heritage Auctions in the United States.
