Over the next three years, settlements within Russia will switch exclusively to domestic payment systems. This was stated by the First Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Olga Skorobogatova and added that the share of payments using Visa and Mastercard is declining.
“The share of Visa and Mastercard is falling. I think that on the horizon of three years, we will indeed settle within the country only with our payment solutions,” said Ms. Skorobogatova at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (quoted from TASS). According to her, within five years, the international payment infrastructure will move from SWIFT to regional platforms.
In the spring of 2022, after the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, the international payment systems Visa and Mastercard left Russia. Now payments in Russia are provided by NSPK, which operates the Mir payment system.
