Kommersant FM columnist Dmitry Butkevich talks about how the 17th International Winter Arts Festival took place.
The 17th International Winter Arts Festival under the artistic direction of Yuri Bashmet ended in Sochi. Triumphant, as always: eight world premieres, full houses (at some evenings people even stood in the boxes, at the concert “Teodor Currentzis and MusicAeterna”, for example).
In general, the audience of Sochi festivals is changing, read, growing before our eyes, after all, I have been observing the events from the inside for 15 years. A typical example: this time Denis Matsuev decided to play Alfred Schnittke’s First Concerto at the gala opening. It wasn’t easy for me, but the people of Sochi stood, listened, and cheered.
A word from festival producer Dmitry Grinchenko: “What is changing? Yes, everything is changing. I saw an audience who has been waiting for our festival all year. Not only Sochi residents, but conscious people from different cities are aware of our program, they fly in specifically for these days, they all spend 10-12 festival days with us there. It’s probably important that there are no seats in the halls, that the sold-out crowds are phenomenal even for us.”
A few technical details: four venues were involved in Sochi and Krasnaya Polyana and one more, very unexpected one – the All-Russian Youth Symphony Orchestra played at the airport right on the runway, and then moved with pianist Ksenia Bashmet to the waiting room. And right now, VYSO is holding the Festival of Youth Orchestras of the World there, in the Winter Theater of Sochi, as part of the World Youth Festival.
Of the musical impressions, the most memorable was the performance of bass Ildar Abdrazakov, which took place before the start of the festival itself, since the opera singer and his family were supposed to fly away on vacation; German soprano Simone Kermes, who is called the “Queen of the Baroque” and who literally danced around singing vocalises.
And, of course, the magnificent Currentzis with “Scheherazade” by Rimsky-Korsakov, but for an encore the musicAeterna orchestra completely unexpectedly played “Moscow Evenings”. The choice was controversial, but the audience literally roared with delight.
