Yekaterinburg is hosting the One-Sixth Debut Film Festival, designed to serve as a revival of the Sverdlovsk film studio. For many years she was in a deplorable state. Many attempts have been made to revive it. Aleksey Fedorchenko even shot the documentary comedy Cinema of the Age of Change, after which the entire management of the studio was removed.
The Sverdlovsk film studio was born in 1943, as they say, by mistake. Initially, a completely different city was planned for its creation during the Great Patriotic War. Its first leader was not a cinematographer, but the chief designer of a large enterprise. Almost from the first days, the School of Acting Skills began to work. Following tradition, One-Sixth started with an acting lab.
The flagship of the Sverdlovsk film studio was Yaropolk Lapshin, the director of “Gloomy River” and “Privalovsky Millions”, the scenery of which is kept as shrines. He made his debut at the studio as director Mikhail Kozakov with “The Nameless Star”. We were shown a white dress in which Anastasia Vertinskaya was filming with him. In Sverdlovsk, now Oscar-winner Alexander Petrov shot the animated film “The Cow”, which was nominated for the main film award in the world. Here began the career of Aleksey Kharitidi, who lives in Canada, whose cartoon Gagarin won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and was nominated for an Oscar.
The modern life of the studio is not so optimistic, although these are not ruins and not terrible shabby corridors. Everything works, although the equipment is not enough, but there are nine projects in the pipeline. The preparation of the second team began – the second directors, specialists in props for the Ural region. And during the festival, young people from different cities of the country came to the Ural Acting Laboratory to take part in master classes, talk about self-tests and networking, meet with casting directors, learn about participating in international projects (not all are irrevocably closed). Anna Kotova-Deryabina called on novice colleagues to sincerely rejoice at someone else’s success. Evgeny Sangadzhiev, now not only a successful actor, but also a director, spoke about the filming of the Ballet series with the participation of professional dancers. A few years ago, a theater laboratory was held in the Urals, the participants of which went to the forest for the sake of their project and did not return. They were searched by two detachments of search engines and found only in the early morning. Luckily the nights were warm and the girls didn’t get cold. Before the start of the current film laboratory, actress Anastasia Kolesina said that she would get from St. Petersburg to Yekaterinburg on foot. And all in order to draw attention to her and invite her to the festival. She developed her walking idea in every possible way, but then it turned out that the long journey was an illusion. But the young actress achieved her goal and now has the opportunity to participate in the acting laboratory with dozens of other talents. Beginning actors dream of acting with Konstantin Bogomolov, and Andrei Zvyagintsev’s films seem to them far from reality. They themselves live happily, but he has such a deep provincial darkness.
While novice actors are busy with studies, Yuliya Snigir, who has become an ideal for many of them, works as part of the international jury of the game competition. It included filmmakers from Iran, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Italy. Perhaps the most exotic painting that they will appreciate is “Red Kurte” by Sahysalykh Bayramov from Turkmenistan. It was represented by the deputy head of the association “Turkmenfilm” Sahysalykh Bairamov. This is his feature film debut. Before that, Sahysalykh filmed documentaries and worked as an actor. As a teenager, he starred in the film “Son”, where he played the son of a soldier. Now his son played the boy in the “Red Kurt”. Before the start of the show, the director treated the audience to chocolate-covered melons, organized a mini-exhibition of national headdresses – from skullcaps to telpeka, a shaggy sheep’s hat. She is pressed to her chest by the main character, for whom this is a reminder of the groom who went to war. The bride was played by a beautiful second-year student of the Turkmen Institute of Culture Aina Dzhumaeva. She is already working at the Pushkin Theater in Ashgabat. Aina and even the actor who played the postman are professionals, the rest of the roles are played by local residents. The picture was shot by a film crew of 20 people in four months in 50-degree heat.
The Great Patriotic War is going on, and the main character Meretli goes to the front on his wedding day. He did not see his fiancee Gowher, but she would wait for his return for the rest of his life. The groom will write a letter to the bride, where he promises to return with victory. Throughout his widowhood, Govher will wear a kurta cape, which in Turkmenistan is supposed to be left on forty days after the wedding. At the end of the film, a Soviet song by Yan Frenkel with lyrics by Rasul Gamzatov, well-known by Mark Bernes, will be heard. The lines “Sometimes it seems to me that the soldiers who did not come from the bloody fields…” will sing in the Turkmen language. And they were written by the ex-president of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
The scenery made of reeds reminded Alexei Fedorchenko’s “Last” Sweet Bulgaria “, who bought up all the reeds in the country before filming. As it turned out, “Red Kurte” was filmed in a Turkmen village, although some of the scenery was still specially built. The most touching shots are associated with domestic animals – this is a helpless puppy, lambs and goats, who are looked after by Govher, a handsome horse confiscated by some people in the name of the motherland and victory. The soldier will never return from the war. Until old age, his bride will be faithful to him and wait for her ideal man. In the finale, we will see archival footage from 2012, where 85-year-old Nurbi talks about how she was waiting for the groom. Her story formed the basis of the film.
