The European Commission (EC) has begun preparations for the introduction of tariffs on grain products from Belarus and Russia. This was announced by the head of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, following the first day of the European Union (EU) summit in Brussels.

“For this (the introduction of tariffs.— “Ъ”) there are several good reasons. This will prevent Russian grain from destabilizing the European market. This will stop Russia from using profits from exports to the EU,” Ms. von der Leyen said at a press conference (quoted by TASS).

About the EC’s plans in the coming days to introduce a duty on grain from Russia and Belarus in the amount of €95 per ton reported Financial Times. According to her, a similar fee will be established for oilseeds and their processed products. The Kremlin, commenting on this information, promised draw conclusions. In 2023, Russian grain imports into the union amounted to 4 million tons, which is 1% of total grain consumption in the EU.
