The European Commission fined Apple €1.8 billion – Kommersant

Today, March 4, European Commission fined Apple Corporation for €1.8 billion for violating EU antitrust laws. This is the first fine for an American corporation in Europe imposed for abuses in the music streaming market.
Back in 2019, music streaming service Spotify filed a complaint against Apple, claiming that the corporation was abusing its dominant position in the market. The European Commission then began investigation against Apple. The company has since changed some of its rules, including allowing app developers to tell customers about payment options other than its own payment system and allowing Spotify and other music services to offer subscriptions outside of iOS. However, Spotify soon stated that the proposed changes were “just for show.”
The European Commission also concluded that Apple prevented developers from “fully informing iOS users about alternative and cheaper subscription options outside of its app.” This affected the interests of users, since due to this company policy they “paid significantly more for subscriptions to music services.”
A few weeks ago Financial Times wrote about the European Commission’s plans to fine Apple. However, its sources reported a significantly smaller fine – €500 million.
