Hungary has received the official consent of the European Commission to amend the agreement for the construction of two power units at the Paks-2 nuclear power plant, concluded with Rosatom, said Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó. The document allows the Russian state corporation, as an exception, to carry out work on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Hungary.
“Yesterday we received the green light from the European Commission. She approved changes to the contract regarding both construction and financing,” the minister said in a video posted on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).
According to Mr. Szijjarto, the need for additional coordination of Rosatom’s participation in the project to build the Paks-2 nuclear power plant in Hungary arose due to the fact that the agreements with the Russian state corporation were originally concluded in 2014 and since then there have been “life and technological changes “. The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry assured that the construction of the Paks-2 nuclear power plant would be carried out in compliance with all safety standards. He stressed that no sanctions have been imposed on the Russian nuclear industry at the European level, so the project to build a nuclear power plant in Hungary does not violate the current restrictions in any way.
At the end of 2014, Russia and Hungary signed documents on the construction of NPP Paks new power units No. 5 and No. 6 (Paks-2). It was assumed that Russia would provide Hungary with a loan of up to €10 billion for the project, and the total cost of the work was estimated at €12.5 billion. The Hungarian regulator issued a license for the construction of Paks-2 in August 2022. According to Rosatom, construction at the facility is scheduled to begin in 2024.
