The wooden door on which Kate Winslet’s character escaped in the finale of the film “Titanic” directed by James Cameron was sold at auction for £567.5 ($718.7 thousand), reported The Guardian. Heritage Auctions also sold the actress’s dress, which she wore in the final scenes of Titanic, for $125,000.

The newspaper notes that since the film’s release in 1997, “debate has raged over whether the piece of wood on which Rose (Kate Winslet) escapes the icy water could actually contain her lover Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.” In 2022, Mr Cameron sought to dispel the notion that “Jack’s death was unnecessary”. He conducted an experiment involving two stuntmen who had the same body weight as the performers of the two main roles. The stuntmen were placed on a similar raft in icy water, with special sensors attached to them. According to the director, the experiment showed that only one of them would have been able to escape.

“Jack needed to die. It’s like Romeo and Juliet. This is a film about love, loss and mortality. Love is measured by sacrifice,” James Cameron commented on the results of the experiment.

Titanic was nominated for 14 Oscar nominations and won 11 of them. It won Best Picture and James Cameron was named Best Director. The film won similar prizes at the Golden Globe in 1998. The film grossed a record $1.8 billion at the box office.
