Unity Technologies, which develops the cross-platform game engine Unity, announced the resignation of its CEO, President and Chairman of the Board, John Riccitello. He left all positions he held in the company, including losing his seat on the board of directors.
The developer of one of the world’s most popular game engines said James Whitehurst has been appointed interim CEO and President, while Roelof Botha, Unity’s lead independent director, has been named Chairman. At the same time, Mr. Richitello will continue to advise the company during the transition period while management is busy searching for a new permanent CEO.
The company statement did not specify the reasons for the sudden resignation of John Riccitello, who worked at Unity in leadership positions for 10 years. However, his departure took place shortly after the scandal caused by the company’s September announcement of changes in pricing policy. The company was going to introduce a commission for game developers for using its game engine, determining its size by the number of installations of games on the Unity engine. The company assured that nothing would change for the vast majority of customers, but the decision itself caused indignation among gaming industry participants. At the end of September, Unity apologized and made adjustments to the plan.
