The British Music Industry Awards ceremony took place in London’s huge O2 Arena, attracting tens of thousands of spectators in the hall and about 4 million television viewers. The attention of the public is not surprising, because British pop and rock music was originally considered more advanced than American music, and set the tone for the entire world of pop music. It seems that this is a thing of the distant past, and the current ceremony, against the backdrop of the recent Grammy, turned out to be musically rather colorless and even tasteless in places. However, Harry Styles, Beyoncé, Wet Leg, David Guetta and other interesting musicians received the BRIT Awards.
In the huge hall, everything was arranged so that in the center there was a VIP zone in the form of round tables with white tablecloths and drinks (which eventually played a cruel joke on the host of the show, comedian Mo Gilligan), all the nominated artists with friends, as well as various celebrities. For example, actress Salma Hayek with her husband.
The only super duper star among the awardees was Beyoncé, who won two categories – International Artist of the Year and International Song of the Year – for “Break My Soul”. However, her stellar loneliness did not prick anyone’s eyes: the pop-star was not present at the event, unlike the Grammys, where she shone with her luxurious cleavage a week ago. Her new hit, however, does not deserve such close attention at all: it is executed technologically, every movement of the singer and dancers in the costumes of Egyptian pharaohs is verified in the choreography. Only now the artist herself, performing the song, looks more like a robot with a stone face, covered in silicone skin and a golden dress, than a living person. It’s scary to look at, but it’s still a pleasure to listen to. Apparently, the artist was awarded not so much for the song itself, but in total for all the achievements of previous years. Like David Guetta, of course, a well-deserved veteran of the electronic scene, who won the Producer of the Year nomination. Nobody expected him to appear on the lists, but it turns out that he still (two decades!) stirs the hearts of teenagers on the dance floors with his dance sets.
Musician Sam Smith, a corpulent blonde with a round face who loves to perform in voluminous lace dresses, shocked the audience this time by showing up to the ceremony in an inflated latex suit resembling a balloon. A black shiny ball in high-heeled shoes and a tall platform a la the 70s of the last century caused a storm of ironic responses on social networks. With what they just did not compare it – with a dog made of balloons, and with a vinyl record. But in the end, he turned out to be only a star of society columns and gossip.
The main star of the stage that evening was Harry Styles, who won four nominations at once: Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Pop/R&B Act and Artist of the Year. He is known to the Russian listener as one of the members of the One Direction pop group and a participant in the X Factor show, something like our Star Factory. Now the artist performs solo, but he does not forget about his past: “I want to thank my mother for signing me up for the X Factor without my knowledge, because I literally would not be here without you, mom!”
It was Harry Styles who opened the entire ceremony with his performance, performing the main British hit of the year “As It Was”. Quite a faded, though not devoid of discreet charm musical creation. Apparently, you need to listen deeply and thoughtfully to this masterpiece, because at a glance you won’t understand why all of a sudden he fell in love with the English, and the Western public in general, given how kindly Stiles was in Los Angeles at the Grammy Awards.
The touching moment of the ceremony was the speech of Carlos O’Connell, guitarist of the Irish band Fontaines DC, which won the International Band of the Year nomination. The international view of the British professional community fell no further than neighboring Ireland, so formally it can be considered that the prize remained right there, on the islands. The whole group at that moment was on tour in Australia, from where they sent a thank you video message. Only Carlos O’Connell did not join the band for the tour due to a major family event. “Very soon, in 10 days, my first child will be born,” he explained. “My heart is overflowing because there will be new life in this world. I make sure that there is more joy in life, even though this world is so cruel and difficult … “
A small scandal came out around the person of singer Lewis Capaldi, who was nominated for Song of the Year, but lost to Styles. When announcing his performance, host Mo Gilligan mistakenly referred to Capaldi as Sam: “This is brilliant… go crazy… it’s Sam Capaldi!” Lewis took the stage and sang his nondescript “hit” “Forget Me” as if nothing had happened. The song is certainly good, even more catchy than Stiles’, but if it’s rated as “brilliant” and “go crazy”, then these concepts are clearly devalued. After Lewis’ speech, the host of the ceremony hastened to apologize, citing strong drinks, the very ones that were on the tables …
Needless to say, there was just a spewing outburst of sarcastic comments on social media about this innocent incident, in the press it was inflated as if Lewis Capaldi was slinged in mud, and the whole ceremony fell into chaos. In fact, the musician did not even comment on the misunderstanding.
Curious novelty of the year – one of the most nominated bands Wet Leg (translated as “wet leg”, which is certainly intriguing). Typical British pop rock, but with two cheeky girls on vocals. Previously, we saw slightly cheeky cynical rebels in a similar role, mostly guys, now girls have taken on the combination of romantic style and swagger. They do it with talent and look much fresher and more interesting than the over-awarded Beyoncé.
