The cost of car sharing in Moscow turned out to be the lowest in Europe

Moscow car sharing has become the most budget-friendly in Europe, Vedomosti writes. The publication compared car rental prices in more than 30 capitals. A minute of travel in the city costs Muscovites 9.5 rubles. In addition, as reported in the capital’s department of transport, Moscow has the largest car sharing fleet in the world – it exceeded 30 thousand cars.

Will prices for short-term car rentals increase? Vice-President of the National Automobile Union Anton Shaparin hopes that this can be avoided: “The current tariffs, of course, take into account, first of all, the purchasing power of the population. If car sharing is too expensive, then people simply won’t take it. Therefore, it costs adequate money. What will happen next? I hope that carsharing will retain the benefits that Moscow provided it and will not experience severe price pressure from automakers. We hope that cars will decrease in price, including through localization of production.

As for the development of this area, new segments are emerging, for example, cargo and premium car sharing. I am sure that big companies will also come there sooner or later. This market is developing in Moscow, and, of course, the capital’s experience should be adopted by other cities. Because in many of them, car sharing, for example, does not receive free parking. And such a service can only exist with such support from cities.”

Most likely, the demand for carsharing in Moscow will grow, including due to the increase in the cost of purchasing and maintaining a car, says Dmitry Chumakov, general director of the Vector Market Research agency: “An increasing number of young people are trying to treat cars differently – not as objects for investment, but simply as a means of transportation. There are a number of other factors, for example, in this case the issue of parking is easier to solve.

In addition, rising prices for new cars will certainly encourage the development of a model of simply using cars instead of owning them.

The next question is what the permanent audience for carsharing will be. For example, there are people who own cars, but they still periodically use carsharing when it is more convenient for them.”

The mayor’s office hopes that by 2030 the car sharing fleet will be able to expand to 40 thousand cars. The first services appeared in Moscow in 2015, and then only 350 cars were available for short-term rental.
