In the capital of Gaul, as in most large cities, the municipality and the parents of young children are facing a very tense situation, resulting from a slow and constant deterioration of the sector. Main cause: the acute problem of staff recruitment. On the eve of the start of the school year, there are still 20 vacant positions in the 50 municipal crèches, and as many in the 150 associative crèches. In general, the figure increases during the year, because of absences, often caused by fatigue.
In April, 200 positions were vacant in nurseries in Lyon, and 1,100 throughout the Rhône department. However, according to recent studies, the shortage of posts is directly proportional to the lack of cradles and places.
“Breaking the negative image” of the profession
” It’s a vicious circle. We are short of staff, so the teams get tired and become thinner over the course of the year. We use a lot of temporary work, which does not favor long-term educational projects, and makes the job even less attractive,” notes Steven Vasselin, deputy in charge of early childhood at the city of Lyon. For the elected municipal official, the recruitment of staff is the main key to solving the crèche crisis.
The city of Lyon has increased the salaries of all its agents this year from 80 to 200 euros gross. “It is essential to make the profession more attractive. Which means making it more visible, and fundamentally changing its image. Working in a nursery doesn’t mean changing nappies all day! It is an educational work, determining for the awakening of the child “, estimates the Lyonnais elected official, who is also a member of the early childhood sector, created in early 2022 within urban France.
According to Steven Vasselin, only 1% of childcare workers are men. The rate climbs to 30% in Denmark. “The image of this profession is valued in the Nordic countries. We have a lot of work to do to break the negative image that has nothing to do with reality,” says the deputy of the city of Lyon. “For us, the development of outdoor education represents a decisive solution for the future. Outdoor activities profoundly change the educational work and balance of children. We want to make it a benchmark.” announces Steven Vasselin. The city of Lyon plans to build four outdoor crèches by the end of 2023.
