The head of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, said that the Bank of Russia will introduce an updated design of the 1,000 ruble bill in 2024. She said this on press conferences following a meeting of the regulator’s board of directors.
“We assume that the updated design, updated modification will be available next year,” Ms. Nabiullina said. She added that the Central Bank plans to change the process of discussing the design of the banknote – to expand the expert group on this issue and make the discussion about the appearance of the banknote more public. According to the head of the regulator, they want to make changes only on the back of the banknote.
October 16 Central Bank entered updated banknotes in denominations of 1000 and 5000 rubles are put into circulation. On October 18, the regulator announced that it had stopped issuing a 1,000 ruble banknote due to criticism from the Russian Orthodox Church – there was no cross in the image of the dome of the Church of the Vvedenskaya.
