Russian banks issued about 389.6 million cards for individuals in 2022, their number increased by 18% over the year, leads RBC statistics of the Bank of Russia. This is a record high since 2014. The record growth happened against the backdrop of the withdrawal from the Russian market of the international payment systems Visa and Mastercard at the beginning of 2022.
The reason for this increase was the re-issuance of Visa and Mastercard cards to the Russian Mir or their additional opening, including for paying by phone, said Roman Prokhorov, head of the board of the Financial Innovations Association.
The data of the Central Bank take into account the cards in circulation, the statistics do not indicate the number of closed cards.
At the end of 2021, there were 301 million cards in circulation, the annual increase was 9%, in other periods it varied from 4% to 7%, at the end of 2018 it was close to zero.
