The Chairman of the Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina, said that the Central Bank is working to create conditions for foreigners who want to issue cards of the Russian payment system Mir. She did not disclose the possible timing of the implementation of this mechanism.
“We are working with the government to ensure that foreigners can quickly receive a Mir card from us. An important topic here is the remote identification of an individual, because in order to receive a Mir card, a foreigner needs to identify himself, ”said Ms. Nabiullina during a meeting with State Duma deputies from the New People faction (quoted from TASS).
According to the head of the Central Bank, in order for foreign citizens to be able to issue Mir cards abroad, it will be necessary to make changes to Russian legislation. Elvira Nabiullina said that the necessary bills could be submitted to the State Duma already in the spring session.
The Mir payment system currently operates in some partner banks in Abkhazia, Armenia, Belarus, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, South Korea and South Ossetia. More than 15 countries expressed their readiness to implement it.
